Ding Ding Mint Candy

At one day, I suddenly heard a familiar sound, ding-ding-ding sound. I immediately knew what the sound was. Then I dashed out to search for it. Eventually I was able to find it at Semenyih Sentral area. It was mint candies. I had been for years not hearing this sound and the sweet and special mint candy which was sold by this guy with his old bicycles. When I was a child, I I always bought this whenever I came across this sound because it needed perfect timing, he coming on irregular time.

The equipments and setup are exactly the same as I had seen during my childhood

I think not many children nowadays have tasted it before since there are many choices as compared to my old days. I am not sure whether this traditional candy business can be survive in this competitive world. I really hope that I'm still able to enjoy this traditional home made mint candy in my future.

Increase criminal rate in Semenyih

Last month, two tyres of my sister in law car (Kelisa) were stolen. According to neighbour, he saw two Malay guys unlocking the typre at around 5am in the morning. Then the two guys ran off quickly. Luckily my neighbour noticed them, otherwise the other two typres would be gone. See how proffesional the theives were. They replaced the typres with cubic bricks. According to neighbour, it was not the first case. Few similar cases were happened around Semenyih and my residential area. Too bad!! Need to protect the types with special nuts!

More than half year back, my father lorry battery was stolen too. The thief cut off the lock to take out the battery. The criminal rate is increased a lot after the economy downturn. Hai... there is no sense of security over here. What happens to our society?

Imperata cylindrica(L.)Beauv.
(Poaceae)

2 hikers lost in Broga Hill

Direction / Map to Semenyih

This post is to provide some guidance to Semenyih town. As long as you reach Semenyih town, you could easily navigate to other towns around Semenyih, like Broga, Khacau (Sungai Lalang), Beranang, Bangi (the old Bangi town).

There are several ways to Semenyih. Each route has its own pros and cons. So you could choose your route wisely, Trade-off between Time, Distance, Money (toll + fuel), and Accessibility (newbie?).

Route1:
1. From North-South Highway, take exit to Kajang. Follow Kajang signboard (blue colour) if you do not want to pay 2 tolls in Silk Highway. However you will pass through all the traffic jam along Jalan Sungai Chua and Jalan Semenyih. There are numerous traffic lights in Kajang towns. See the map below:

Route2:
If you come from North-South Highway, you could follow the direction below with minimun hassle. Take an exit to Kajang from North-South Highway, then go straight all the way (follow main road), reaching Silk highway. You will have to pay two tolls in Silk Highway, then you could take an exit to Jalan Semenyih right after the 2nd toll.

(If you miss, dont panic. You could drive straight, reaching to Kajang-Semenyih bypass road, just look for Semenyih sign board to exit, you will eventually reach Jalan Semenyih as well. Do not drive to KASEH highway, otherwise you need to pay another expensive toll)

Route3:
From North South Highway, take an exit to Bukit Mahkota and Bandar Sri Putra (near to Nilai rest station). After that you will pass a Petronas station after the toll. Just go straight to pass through a narrow bridge which underneath is a railway. After that turn right at the T juntion (Turn left to Bangi old town). After that you will reach another T juntion to Jalan Bangi. Take right turn again to Semenyih direction (Turn left to Bangi old town). Then drive toward Semenyih town, the road is winding.

If you are not familiar, do not use this especially at night. The connection in between Sri Putra and Jalan Bangi is not well constructed and less signboard. So it is not recommended to those who are new to Semenyih. It is the shortest route to exit North-South highway from Semenyih (10 minutes drives).

Route4:
From Jalan Loke Yew, take the Kajang-Cheras highway. Passing two Cheras Tolls, and drive toward Kajang/Semenyih. At the end of Kajang-Cheras highway, do not exit to Kajang, because Kajang usually has heavy traffic. In other words, just drive straight toward Saujana Impian / Semenyih sign board. You will pass through Tesco at the right hand side and you are now in the Kajang-Semenyih bypass road (no toll). After that you will pass Giant at the left hand side. Just go straight until you see a Jalan Semenyih sign board and take the exit. I uses this route to KL centre.
(Note that if you continues go straight after the exit to Jalan Semenyih in Kajang-Semenyih bypass road, it will lead you to KASEH highway to Seremban/Nilai, there is a toll at the entrance to KASEH. If you accidentally drive into KASEH, immediately take the Semenyih/Bangi exit or the 1st exit from the KASEH toll. After that turn left after the toll. )

Route5:

From Puchong (Cyberjaya /Putrajaya) take the LDP Highway route. After the last LDP toll, go straight and take a left turn to Kajang direction. (keep on going straight will reach Cyberjaya). After that, you will pass through IOI Resort at the right and UPM at the left. After that you will reach to Silk Highway (note: if you dont want to pay Silk Highway Toll, you could take Kajang town road, see route 1). After paying 2 tolls in Silk Highway
, then you take an exit to Jalan Semenyih right after the 2nd toll. (please refer to route 2)

Semenyih Taufu & Udang (beancurd & prawn fritters)

If you feel like eating while you are in Semenyih, then you probably can try these Semenyih Taufu (beancurd) and Udang (prawn fritters). It is famous Malay food in Semenyih town. I normally treat them as snack at the afternoon or tea break. The beancurd and udang are specially made and must be eaten together with the given reddish chilli source. Without the chilli source, the taste is absolutely incomplete. The taufu and udang are RM1 and RM0.60 per pieces. The taufu is a bit expensive in my view.

The restaurant can be easily found because it is just opposite to Semenyih field. The field is near to Sin Min primary school and Kampung Baru Semenyih primary school, therefore it is impossible of not getting the restaurant.

Direction to Nirvana Memorial Park Semenyih

Qing Ming Festival 清明节 is coming very soon, usually falls on around 4th or 5th of April. This blog provides a simple direction to this auspicious Nirvana Memorial Park Semenyih

The google map below shows the simplest and the fastest way (min toll) from Jalan Loke Yew (pointA) to Nirvana Memorial Park (pointB). Take the Kajang-Cheras highway from Jalan Loke Yew, passing two Cheras Tolls, and driving toward Kajang/Semenyih. Just go straight until you see a sign board to exit Semenyih to the Jalan Semenyih.

(Note that if you continues go straight, it will lead you to KASEH highway to Seremban/Nilai, there is a toll at the entrance to KASEH. If you accidentally drive into KASEH, immediately take the Semenyih/Bangi exit or the 1st exit from the KASEH toll, basically you will come to Semenyih town after that)

After that, just follow the main road, passing a BHP station and Semenyih Kampung Baru. There is a traffic light before Semenyih Police station (check on the google map below), take a left turn to Jalan Sungai Lalang (previously called Kachau). At that traffic light, there is a mosque and school at the right hand side. After that you follow the main road until you see Nirvana Memorial park at the left hand side.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you come from North-South Highway, you could follow the direction below with minimun hassle. Take an exit to Kajang from North-South Highway, then go straight all the way, reaching Silk highway. You will have to pay two tolls in Silk Highway, then you could take an exit to Jalan Semenyih right after the 2nd toll. Otherwise, you will reach to Kajang-Semenyih bypass road, just look for Semenyih sign board to exit, you will eventually reach Jalan Semenyih as well. After that, please refer to orange color text above.

Semenyih: Yap Choon Kwai Kon Loh Mee

In Semenyih town, there is a place famous for breakfast. The place is just beside to S. J. K. (C) Sin Ming or Sin Ming primary school The shop name is called Yap Choon Kwai restaurant This restaurant has been here since I was young.

Sin Ming primary school

Yap Choon Kwai restaurant, famous for Kon Loh Mee

Normally the residence of Semenyih just call Yap Choon Kwai. If you are not a local residence here, you most probably will not visit this restaurant because the shop is very old and unattractive. However it is famous for Kon Loh Mee (noodle) 干捞面 and Laksa (curry mee). Due to limited seats, most of the time customers have to wait especially during Sunday. Besides this, if there are too many customers, then you are not allowed to take away to reduce waiting time of seated customers.

The shop looks old and unattractive

This restaurant is managed by Mr. Yap Choon Kwai and his wife as shown in the figure above. With their more than 20 years skills, the Kon Loh Mee is very delicious, filled with black soy sources. There is an option for customer, you could choose either char siu 叉烧 or fish balls / fu zhou. I normally choose fish balls and fu zhou. Besides the Kon Loh Mee, I think the Laksa here also taste superb and wonderful. The santan in the Laksa is just nice in the quatity, does not taste too sweet or too plain.

The noodles here come in two sizes, either small or big size. The small and big size cost RM3.80 and RM4.50 respectively. Apart from this option, grilled chicken wing and curry chicken can be an additional side dishes, which making you awesome!

Tesco Semenyih

Tesco Semenyih in Wikimapia

A very good news to Semenyih residence that Tesco Semenyih has been opened today morning. For those planning to purchase some stuff for Chinese New Year, you might opt for this new option which always provide low price. It might give stiff competition to The Store in Semenyih.

Tesco Semenyih @ Taman Pelangi Semenyih

Here is the map to Tesco Semenyih. It is situated to Taman Pelangi Semenyih entrance. Near to the Tesco, there will be a giant police station, still under construcion. Someone said it will be a police headquater or training center.
The blue rectangle shap is Tesco Semenyih, while blue icon is giant police station

This new open Tesco will definitely provide an alternative choice to Semenyih residence and of course students in the University of Nottingham. But will it make the traffic in Jalan Semenyih worse!! OMG!

drive-through KFC and Pizza Hut

I nearly forgot to mention that beside the Tesco Semenyih, there is a drive-through KFC and Pizza Hut. Wahh, the second KFC restaurant in Semenyih. Great!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updated (May 09)

At the Tesco Semenyih, there is a KFC restaurant also although a drive-through KFC and Pizza Hut are located at the outside of the Tesco . Besides that, Old Town White Coffee can be found here too. It provides a good place for local food like Laksa, prawn mee, toast and its famous white coffee.

Oriental Crystal Hotel @ New Year Dinner

Oriental Crystal Hotel Main Entrance

In order to celebrate new year 2009, my family decided to have scrumptious dinner at Oriental Cyrstal Hotel, situated in Kajang town, near to Jalan Bukit. It was a 4 stars new hotel in Kajang town, creating stiff competition to Prescott Metro Inn (previously was Metro Kajang Inn). If I was not mistaken, it was established in 2007. I had never been to this hotel before.

Lobby hall

The Oriental Imperial Chinese Restaurant was on the first floor with splendid view. It was renowned for its Peking duck with BBQ sources. As a result, it was the first order we made, a must-try dish. Then we also ordered the other 5 dishes.

Peking Roast Duck @ Oriental Imperial Restaurant

Slicing the duck skin with skillful knife kung fu

The most impressive dishes was, of course, Peking Duck. A chief served us a well roasted Peking duck, putting on a small trolley. After that, he was demostrating his skillful knife kung to show how to cut the duck skin in the finest pieces. The other helper rolled the sliced skin with pancakes 荷葉餅. The total process was swift and did not make us impatient. Besides the rolls, it also came with prawn crackers. It also came together with special-made BBQ source, making the dish to perfect. Needless to say, the taste was fantastic and luscious.

Peking Duck meat was served too

Besides enjoying the duck skin, we were also served with the duck meat, otherwise it was quite a waste. The other dishes that we ordered were as below:

Kai Lan vegetables, topping with crispy Kai Lan vegetables

I found the crispy Kai Lan very good (the topping part). I had tasted it before in Penang :P

Special home-made bean-curds (so so only..)

Fish served with gingers

served with dried shrimp

Sushi-like dishes- very yummy & special

As an overall, we were quite satisfied with the dishes. How much did this dinner cost? haha.. it was around RM330 in total, including taxes. I felt it was a bit expensive but my father said it was ok as compared to the other restaurant in Taman Kajang Prima....
Fortunately, we had special discount on that day..

Here provide a map to Oriental Crystal Hotel:
